Top tips to help your pet cope with the fireworks
* Plug in your D A P and or Feliway at least 2 weeks before the firework season starts. You can 'top up' their bolt hole by additional using the sprays on their bedding.
* In the run up to the firework season start walking you dog earlier in the evenings so you are back before dark. Lock your cat indoors before dark, and provide them with a litter tray. Don't put the litter tray near windows, glass doors or their food. Cover your rabbit / guinea pig house or bring them indoors. Ensure your pet is safely inside and secure doors, windows and cat flaps.
* Make a bolt hole for your dog and cat. Somewhere they feel comfortable. A place that is dark and will minimise the noise of fireworks. Create a secure place by putting a comfortable bed, a favourite toy and plug in a D A P or Feliway diffuser. Get them used to this area in the lead up to firework season.
* Get your pet microchipped. If they do escape, frightened animals can easily get lost, and lose their collars.
* Draw curtains, play music and or have the tv on to help mask the noise of fireworks.
* Feed you pet about hour before the fireworks start. This will help them feel sleepy.
* Ignore any fearful behaviour and do not try to comfort your pet. A dog will pick up on your anxiety and this can make the problem worse. Cats prefer to be left alone to cope on their own.
* Don't get cross or punish your pet for bad behaviour as it will only make them more stressed.
* Try not to leave your pet alone when fireworks are going off. Pets may hurt
themselves or cause damage if not supervised.
